CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Whoa--watch out for that--” the tires screeched; brakes brought the car to a halt. “Cone…” Jerald sighed as Madi buried her head in the steering wheel.

Beyond exhausted with the lesson she’d put off for years now, Madison groaned, saying, “Maybe I should just give up.”

“Now--now, Care Bear, you just started learning how to drive.”

Madison leaned back in the seat, staring at the empty parking lot lined with orange cones. Jerald found the perfect place to teach her. He took out time week after week to drive her around. Sure enough, she could find it in herself to be better at learning something she should have known by now.

“Don’t be silly. Now, I don’t remember exactly when I learned how to drive--”

“Awwh, you aren’t that old,” Madison said, cutting in.

“You are too kind, Bear. But I’m old.”

Madison didn’t say anything else. Seeing her lifelong pal with many grey hairs and wrinkles made it hard to deny his age. The tremble seen in his hands just added to Madison’s fear of one day losing her friend. The fact that he was no longer able to drive for her hurt a lot more than Madison wanted to admit. Not because she’d have to chauffeur herself, but an essential person in her life would not be as present as before.

“Alright…” Madison said, sitting up and refocusing on the road ahead. She took in all the cones, the course of the road, and the vehicle that would take her where she needed to go. There might be bumps along the way, but Madison knew that she would get over them.

She put the car in reverse, maneuvering the car the way it needed to get off the cone, then moved forward.

The obstacle course was not a straight path. Madison had to slow down along the way to make sure she didn’t run over another cone. Lesson learned from last time, Madison made sure to actually watch for where she was going. By the time she made it to the finish line, Madison felt more confident and sure of herself. Able to see that she could get herself from start to finish on her own. All she had to do was keep her mind focused on the right direction.

If only her love life could be as straightforward.

Everything with Veronica was like these cones but crisscrossed and scattered all about the road. A jumbled up mess that resembled closer to pieces for an impossible jigsaw puzzle.

After running the course a few more times, Madison took the car on the streets. The Hamptons was nothing like driving in New York City. And she knew this. Madison figured she’d continue to take public transit unless that was impossible.

After driving down empty roads, Madison felt confident enough to brave the busier ones. Driving amongst other people was a new experience in itself. The first thing Madison noticed was how rude people were behind the wheel. Various cars rode a few feet away from her bumper, tailing her simply because she didn’t want to drive faster than the speed limit.
